The 13th District is one of the most diverse districts in America. Our communities comprise of residents from all walks of life, including 44.6% of those who identify as a minority. Our communities have played many important roles in welcoming newly arrived refugees and immigrants as ports of entry. In recent years, our neighborhoods have resettled Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Syrian, Afghani, East and West African, and Ukrainian refugees, in addition to immigrants from Greece, Poland, China, Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, South Korea, China, Germany, and other countries.Our district welcomes immigrants and refugees across the globe with several social service agencies ready to meet the needs.
The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) Family Support Network connects immigrant communities throughout Illinois to a full range of support - social services, legal aid, policy updates, financial assistance, and law enforcement - in collaboration with member organizations. As of Dec. 1st, 2020 Illinois is the first state to offer health benefit coverage to immigrant seniors! This coverage applies to non-citizens age 65 or over who are not eligible for Medicaid assistance in Illinois due to immigration status. You can learn more about this coverage here.
